How It Works
What happens if I miss my daily check-in?
If you don't check in within your chosen timeframe (24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours, or 1 week), your guardians will automatically receive notifications via their preferred channels—email, SMS, Telegram, or push notification. They'll be informed that you haven't checked in and when your last check-in was.
When exactly will guardians be notified?
Our system checks every 5 minutes for overdue check-ins. Once your threshold is exceeded (default is 48 hours), guardians are notified within the next 5-minute window. For example, if your threshold is 48 hours and you last checked in at 2:00 PM Monday, guardians would be notified shortly after 2:00 PM Wednesday.
How are guardians notified?
Guardians receive notifications through the channels they've enabled: email, SMS, Telegram, or any combination. They choose their preferred notification methods when they verify their contact information. SMS alerts are currently available for US and Canadian phone numbers only; email and Telegram alerts work worldwide. Push notifications are sent to you (the enrollee) to let you know your guardians have been contacted.
Can I pause notifications temporarily?
Yes! If you're going on vacation, staying with family, or in the hospital, you can disable monitoring from the app's settings. When disabled, the system won't trigger any alerts to your guardians. You can re-enable it anytime with a single tap.
What happens if I check in late after an alert was already sent?
No worries! When you check in after guardians have been alerted, the system automatically sends them an "all clear" notification letting them know you've checked in and everything is okay. This prevents unnecessary worry or follow-up.
Will I get a reminder before my deadline?
Yes! When you reach 75% of your threshold (for example, 36 hours into a 48-hour window), you'll receive a gentle push notification reminder to check in. This helps prevent false alarms while still giving you flexibility.
Guardians
How many guardians can I add?
Free accounts can add up to 3 guardians. With a DayTap Premium subscription ($1/month), you can add up to 10. We recommend at least 2-3 trusted contacts to ensure someone is always reachable in case of an emergency.
Do my guardians need to install the app?
No! Guardians receive notifications via email, SMS, and/or Telegram—they don't need to download anything. They simply need to verify their contact information when you first add them.
How do guardians verify their contact info?
When you add a guardian, they'll receive a verification email with a link to confirm. If you've provided their phone number, they'll also receive a welcome SMS. If you've enabled Telegram, the verification email will include a link to connect with the DayTap Telegram bot. Verification links are valid for 7 days. Guardians must verify their email before they can receive alert notifications.
Can guardians opt out of notifications?
Yes. Guardians can opt out of SMS notifications by replying "STOP" to any message from DayTap. Telegram users can send /stop to the DayTap bot to opt out (and /start to opt back in). Email notifications can be disabled by contacting support. We respect their communication preferences while keeping you informed.
Can I change who my guardians are?
Absolutely. You can add or remove guardians anytime from the app's settings. Changes take effect immediately.
Settings & Customization
Can I change my check-in window?
Yes! You can choose from preset thresholds: 24 hours, 48 hours (default), 72 hours, or 1 week. Pick the timeframe that fits your lifestyle and routine.
Can I check in from the lock screen widget?
Yes! DayTap includes home screen widgets and lock screen widgets for quick check-ins. You can tap "I'm OK" without even unlocking your phone. We also support App Intents for Siri shortcuts.
What if I accidentally check in?
Each check-in is recorded with a timestamp. There's no "undo" button, but checking in multiple times in a day is fine—your most recent check-in is what matters for the threshold calculation.
Account & Subscription
Is DayTap free?
Yes! DayTap's core features are completely free: daily check-ins, push reminders, and guardian alerts (email, SMS, and Telegram notifications) with up to 3 guardians. An optional $1/month subscription lets you add up to 10 guardians.
How do I cancel my subscription?
You can cancel anytime through your iPhone's Settings > [Your Name] > Subscriptions > DayTap. Your subscription will remain active until the end of the current billing period.
What happens to my account if I cancel?
Your account, check-in history, and guardian alerts remain fully functional. If you have more than 3 guardians, your existing guardians will continue to receive alerts, but you won't be able to add new ones until you're at or below the free tier limit.
What happens if my subscription expires?
All core features continue to work — your guardians will still be alerted if you miss a check-in. The only change is the guardian limit drops back to 3 for adding new guardians. Existing guardians remain active regardless.
Technical
What if I lose my phone or get a new one?
Sign in with Apple Sign-In or your email on your new device. All your data—guardians, check-in history, and preferences—will sync automatically. Your subscription is tied to your Apple ID, so it transfers seamlessly.
Does the app work offline?
You need an internet connection to submit a check-in. However, the app will queue your check-in and sync it once you're back online (within your threshold window).
What platforms are supported?
DayTap is currently available for iOS 17+ (iPhone). We're starting with iOS to focus on building the best possible experience. Let us know if you'd like to see Android support in the future!
How is my data protected?
All user data is encrypted at rest in our database. We use industry-standard security practices and host on Cloudflare's global network. We take your privacy seriously and never sell your data to third parties. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Edge Cases
What if I'm unable to check in for an extended period?
If you know in advance (hospital stay, extended travel), disable monitoring from settings. If it's unexpected, your guardians will be alerted as designed—that's exactly what the app is for. When you're able, check in to send the all-clear notification.
Can someone else check in for me?
Technically, anyone with access to your unlocked phone could tap the check-in button. However, the purpose of DayTap is to confirm you are okay, so we recommend only you perform check-ins. If someone else has your device, consider whether that defeats the safety purpose.
Are there limits on how often guardians can be alerted?
Yes. To prevent alert fatigue and system abuse, there's a rate limit of 5 alerts per 7-day rolling window per enrollee. This means if you miss five check-ins in a week, subsequent missed check-ins won't trigger additional guardian alerts until the window resets. Push reminders to you are not affected by this limit.
What's the longest check-in window I can set?
Currently, the maximum threshold is 1 week (168 hours). This balances flexibility with the app's core safety purpose. If you need a longer window for a specific situation, consider temporarily disabling monitoring instead.
My check-in deadline passed, but my guardians didn't receive alerts. Why?
Guardian alerts require several conditions to be met. First, confirm that your guardians have properly set up their contact methods: email addresses must be verified (via the link sent when you added them), and phone numbers must not have opted out of SMS notifications. You can check each guardian's verification status in the app—look for green checkmarks next to verified/enabled methods, or orange/gray indicators for pending or opted-out status. Additionally, the system has a rate limit of 5 alerts per 7-day rolling window to prevent alert fatigue. Make sure monitoring is enabled in your settings.
